OCTOBER
15
Carrying out actions that will improve our environment is an ongoing task that THB hotels takes particularly seriously. Under the ECO friendly brand, we work each day within the framework of a sustainability programme designed to introduce environmentally friendly practices.
Here are a few of the actions we have successfully carried out during 2019:
- Organisation of a beach clean-up in Porto Cristo.
- Start of work to replace curtains with sustainable fibre alternatives. In the bathrooms, we have swapped individual-sized amenities for dispensers.
- We are gradually reducing single-use plastic consumption in our hotels. We now use paper straws instead of plastic ones. In addition, biodegradable cups are now supplied with our water dispensers, take away and coffee machines. We have also stopped using plastic bags to store blankets in the room, replacing them with fabric alternatives.
- Cleaning products used in the housekeeping department, kitchens and restaurants are now purchased in bulk rather than in disposable packaging.
- At the THB Cala Lliteras**** (Cala Ratjada, Majorca) and THB Los Molinos**** (Ibiza Town) hotels, recovery units have been installed to capture heat from the air conditioning systems that are used to supply the entire hotel with hot water, thereby cutting energy consumption. Both these hotels now also have garden paths made from recycled materials.
- At the THB Cala Lliteras****, thermal break aluminium has been installed to replace the PVC joinery. The electrical installation in this hotel has been changed over to LED lighting and Monitoring systems have been installed in all the utility areas.
- Partial meters have been installed in all the chain’s hotels for more effective consumption controls.
- We have set up ECO-friendly information points in all our hotels to raise awareness amongst both guests and employees of the need for energy efficiency and to save water, recycle and reduce waste, amongst other measures.
- We are collaborating with the NGO CEAMAR. For every towel change our guests request at the THB Tropical Island**** hotel (Playa Blanca, Lanzarote) we donate the full amount to this organisation, as a means of supporting their work to protect and conserve our seas and marine life.
- We are working to reduce our carbon footprint, cutting consumption in order to lower gas emissions. We have also limited product acquisition and use, promoting their reuse and recycling. In short, we are focusing on the classic three Rs sustainability rule in order to reduce our carbon footprint.
However, our greatest concern is undoubtedly climate change. At THB hotels we are aware of the major impact tourism has on the environment and are therefore committed to introducing changes to habits that damage our planet.
We will continue working to raise awareness amongst guests, employees and suppliers...sending out a message of the importance of caring for the planet with small actions that together can make a real difference.
Below are just a few of the actions we will be launching in our hotels starting next year:
- We will eliminate plastic bottles and replace them with cardboard containers.
- At the THB Guya Playa**** (Cala Ratjada, Majorca) recovery units will be installed to capture the heat generated by the air conditioning systems to supply the entire hotel with hot water.
- Slippers, which are currently presented in a plastic bag, will be protected by a bag made of non-woven fabric.
- We will be adding to the number of the recycling points in our hotels to encourage this practice amongst guests.
- We will be providing THB hotels staff with further training in environmental issues and governance for sustainability.
- Caring for our gardens is an essential part of the THB hotels philosophy. Next year and wherever possible, we will be planting trees in our gardens to create new carbon sinks that contribute to neutralising the amount of CO2 present in the air.
- The buffet restaurants in our hotels will no longer use individual plastic sachets. Instead, we will use better quality bulk options.
