THB hotels drives the circular economy with the Fundació Deixalles Foundation’s “Fem que Circuli” project

Here at THB hotels, we’re proud to announce our participation in the Fundació Deixalles Foundation’s project “Fem que Circuli" (Let’s Get Things Circulating), an initiative designed to drive the circular economy and support the social and labour insertion of people in vulnerable situations. This joint effort has resulted in major advances in the management and reuse of waste in the Balearic Islands’ hotel sector.

Here at THB hotels, we’re proud to announce our participation in the Fundació Deixalles Foundation’s project “Fem que Circuli" (Let’s Get Things Circulating), an initiative designed to drive the circular economy and support the social and labour insertion of people in vulnerable situations. This joint effort has resulted in major advances in the management and reuse of waste in the Balearic Islands’ hotel sector.

The main aim of “Fem que Circuli" is to reduce waste by reusing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. In addition to contributing to environmental sustainability, this project also generates social benefits by creating employment and training opportunities for people at risk of social exclusion. Over the last year, collaboration agreements have been signed with numerous companies operating in the hotel and catering sector, resulting in the collection free-of-charge of reusable materials and the issuance of certificates detailing the amounts managed and the CO₂emissions prevented.

In 2023, the project achieved a number of significant milestones. According to the annual report, 194 tons of objects and waste were collected from tourism establishments, a year-on-year rise of 64%. Among the bulkiest items collected were chairs, mattresses, mattress bases and tables. No less than 90% of these materials have been reused, a clear reflection of the commitment shown by THB hotels and its partners to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The waste was collected mainly in the municipalities of Palma, Alcudia and Sant Llorenç. THB hotels is part of this magnificent initiative and as such, the company’s hotels contributed a series of materials. For instance, a total of 24 mattress bases were collected for reuse from the THB Cala Lliteras hotel (Cala Ratjada, Mallorca). Likewise, on Ibiza, our THB Los Molinos hotel contributed 350 kg of furniture, which was reused in the Foundation’s social and labour insertion workshops. The environmental impact of each of these donations represents a saving of 0.39 tons of CO₂ equivalent, corresponding to the amount of CO₂absorbed by 19,933 trees in a single day or the CO₂ produced by 68 cars in 24 hours.
