The THB Felip hotel: 135 years of Mallorca’s history

The THB Felip hotel, located in Porto Cristo, Mallorca, is celebrating its 135th anniversary.
Founded in 1889 by Jaume Rosselló Gomila, "Felip" was originally a small inn that quickly gained popularity for its excellent hospitality. Over time, the inn evolved into a hotel that drew travellers seeking a friendly seaside retreat.

By the mid-20th century, Mallorca was rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination, renowned for its climate, beaches and the development of transport infrastructures. Furthermore, the Drach and Hams Caves drew numerous archaeologists. However, once the caves were illuminated, visitor numbers began to increase significantly, adding a further reason for visiting the island, and Porto Cristo in particular.

Although the Spanish Civil War and the World War II put the island’s tourism development on hold, the 1960s and 1970s saw an unprecedented boom due to the rising number of charter flights. The Hotel Felip, with its plum location and reputation for excellence, benefited from this surge in tourism, attracting both domestic travellers and international visitors in search of Mediterranean charm.

Apart from being a prime destination for holidaymakers, the THB Felip hotel was also known for hosting a large number of congresses and competitions, such as the World Festival of Elegance and Beauty, which took place in 1963.

In 1990, Banca March granted THB hotels the management of the hotel for a period of five years. Until then, it had been run by three generations of the Rosselló family (founders of the original inn). At this time, an initial renovation was carried out, adding ensuite bathrooms to all the rooms and earning the hotel a three-star rating. In 1995, Banca March sold the hotel to THB hotels, and the chain carried out major refurbishment work which enabled the property to receive a four-star rating. The facilities were modernised, the rooms renovated, the communal areas improved, and the dining options expanded, all while remaining true to the hotel’s original essence. Over the years, the THB Felip hotel has successfully maintained a balance between tradition and modernity, positioning itself as a space that seamlessly combines history, comfort, and sustainability.

Today, the hotel continues to be one of Porto Cristo’s principal amenities, attracting tourists eager to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and prime seafront location. The THB Felip hotel’s history mirrors the evolution of tourism on Mallorca, from the island’s first tentative steps as a tourist destination to its current position as one of the Mediterranean’s top destinations; a place where history and innovation go hand-in-hand.
