What is responsible consumption?
When choosing products we should always ask ourselves under what kind of human and working conditions they are made.
Conscious and responsible consumption, compatible with the conservation of nature and aimed at promoting eco-friendly activities, can make a major contribution to both society and the environment and is a crucial element for market change.
The term ‘responsible’ includes the notions of ethical, ecological and caring consumption. It involves selecting products not just in accordance with their quality and price, but also considering their social and environmental impact, as well as the ethics of the companies that make them.
Ethical consumption
Ethical consumption is all about considering the fairest, most caring or eco-friendly consumer options, selecting those products that comply with these values, rather than basing our decisions on price and personal benefit. It places particular emphasis on austerity, in other words differentiating between real and created needs. The result is a reduction in the amount of products consumed, thereby also cutting the amount of waste and pollution generated during the production and consumption processes.
Eco-friendly consumption
Eco-friendly consumption refers to conscious consumption; apart from satisfying their needs, consumers also try to act in the most beneficial way possible for the environment and others.
It involves a basic production cycle based on the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling the various social products. It also analyses products of organic origin, focusing on the promotion of eco-friendly farming and livestock breeding, traditional handcrafted methods and all those forms of production that do not impact negatively on the environment.
Caring consumption
This type of consumption focuses on social relationships and the working conditions under which products and services are offered. It consists of paying a fair price for the work involved and promoting alternative production and integration options for society, thereby boosting equal and sustainable development.
Ecological consumption can be considered from various perspectives:
- Reducing the amount of items purchased.
- Selecting items that have been produced in a way that does not impact negatively on the environment or contribute to its degradation.
- Excluding those items that require the consumption of large amounts of natural resources in their production processes.
- Always considering the option of choosing natural or biodegradable products instead of other, more contaminating options.
- Avoiding packed or packaged products in order to ensure waste-free consumption.
- When purchasing an item, taking into consideration product manufacturers and distributors that have been awarded an Environmental Management System certificate. As consumers we have the opportunity to make decisions that are in accordance with our convictions.
At THB hotels we work hard each day to put all these ideas into practice.
We are convinced of the importance of choosing suppliers who are as committed to environmental care as we are. We inform our customers about the ways they can consume resources in a more responsible and eco-friendly manner. And above all, we have eliminated wastefulness and are committed to minimum consumption in order to reduce the amount of waste we generate.
